Due to the introduction of a new product on the market, Helen has updated Surface Techniques 1 and Surface Techniques 3. If you purchased these tutorials before November 9, 2009 please note the following updates to Surface Techniques 1 (step 8) and Surface Techniques 3 (step 9):
Seal & Protect the Surface. The last step is to seal the ink and give the tiles a nice glossy finish. The challenge here is that alcohol inks will bleed into most products. The only product I've found so far that properly seals the ink is Preserve Your Memories II Acrylic Sealant (available through Shades of Clay). It is an aerosol spray. Apply in a well ventilated area, preferably outside, and follow the product's safety instructions. Spray your tiles with a VERY light, barely there coat, holding the can approximately 10 inches above your tiles. Let dry about 3 or 4 minutes. Apply a second light coat holding the can about 6 inches above the tiles. Let dry. Test your tile by dunking it in water and ensure there is no ink coming off onto the paper towel as you dry. it. The ink should now be sealed.
Now a nice high gloss shine needs to be applied. Apply 2-3 very thin coats of liquid varathane, always letting it dry thoroughly between layers. Now you're ready to assemble your tiles.
